Description

The Wood Green War Memorial, designed in 1920 by an unknown designer, is made of Portland stone and features gold mosaic panels above bronze inscription panels, with York stone steps leading up to it. The memorial has a tripartite screen with a central section that projects forward, flanked by wings. The upper part is divided by Ionic pilasters and displays round tablets adorned with bay wreaths, listing battle honours from the Great War, including Salonika, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Belgium, France, Italy, Gallipoli, Jutland, Heligoland, Falklands, Zeebrugge, Palestine, India, and Africa.

In the center, there is a roundel featuring a relief of St. George and the Dragon, along with the inscription "ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION BY THE INHABITANTS OF WOOD GREEN 1920." The tablets on either side of the center are set against a gold mosaic background. Above, the frieze is inscribed in Roman capitals with the words "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." A mid-height frieze commemorates those who lost their lives in 1939-1945. The central lower panel, adorned with a garland, reads "TO THE UNDYING MEMORY OF THE MEN OF WOOD GREEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 1939-1945."

The lower section is divided by fluted Doric pilasters and features six renewed bronze tablets listing the names of the deceased. Below the central panel are two convex steps, and the entire memorial stands on a three-stepped stone base with convex steps. This dignified Greek-inspired memorial honors the 990 men of Wood Green who lost their lives in the First World War.
