Description
Greengates War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1921, with later additions commemorating the Second World War. It was designed by E Wright of Greengates and L F Roslyn of South Kensington, London. The memorial consists of a square white Portland stone column with a carved top, set upon a stepped sandstone base. A bronze winged figure stands atop the column. The leading face features an incised inscription dedicated to the men of Greengates and district who died in the Great War (1914-1919), accompanied by a bronze laurel wreath. Bronze plaques on the other three sides list 80 names. A further incised inscription on the base commemorates those who died in the War of 1939-1945, flanked by two metal plaques bearing 28 names, with one additional name recorded to the right. Near the top of the column, the inscriptions “Honour”, “Freedom”, “Peace”, and “Justice” are inscribed, one word on each side, above which are two incised Latin crosses on the leading and rear faces. A frieze of stylised leaves appears near the base of the column. A stone ball, surrounded by a laurel wreath, sits atop the column, supporting a bronze statue of a female winged figure holding a laurel wreath, likely representing 'peace gained through sacrifice', or Athene. The memorial is set within a flower bed and includes associated commemorative items such as two triangular stones with metal plaques marking royal visits in 1923 and 1928. It stands within a small memorial garden at a crossroads. The sculptor Roslyn is known for similar bronze sculptures at Calverley and Wetherby, among others. This is a notable war memorial featuring a bronze sculpture representing victory.
