Description
The Obelisk Memorial drinking fountain, dating from around 1880, is a memorial drinking fountain made of grey granite. It features a tall, tapering obelisk topped with a pyramidal terminal, which stands on a square pedestal. The pedestal has inscribed sides with semi-circular basins, a cornice, and cavetto moulding above a torus and base. The fountain has a two-stage octagonal base with shallow steps below each basin.
The main inscription on the east face commemorates Mrs. Catherine Smithies of Earlham Grove, Wood Green, as the founder of the Band of Mercy Movement, and notes that it was presented by her family and friends for public use. The north face contains a biblical quote from John IV, 13-14, while the west face features another quote from II Peter I, 6, and the south face includes a passage from John III, 16. This fountain is a notable example of a practical type of religious memorial.
