Description
St Leonard's House, also known as Judge Fuller's Almshouses, was built in 1904 by Alfred W. S. Cross. This two-storey symmetrical building features five first-floor windows in the main block, with one window set back in the side bays. It is constructed of red brick with quoins and has a slated roof that includes a moulded and modillioned eaves cornice. Above the roof, there is a wide pediment adorned with a sculptured garland and cartouche inscribed with "S C T 1904". The building has gauged flat brick arches over sash windows with glazing bars, and a central long window opening leads to a balcony above a bracketed cornice hood that shelters a round-headed door with a traceried round light and side lights. Large round bows flank either side of the entrance. On the first floor to the left, there is a bronze plaque detailing the history of the almshouses, which originated from two sets of charities at Hackney Road and Old Street. To the right, another plaque commemorates the construction of these new homes. St Leonard's House, along with the Porters and Walters almshouse, the Commemorative Stone, and the front railings and gates, form a cohesive group.
