Description
The war memorial located on The Green in Haslemere was built between 1920 and 1921. It was designed by local architect Inigo Triggs and authorized by Sir Algernon Methuen, the chairman of the War Memorial committees. The memorial is made of natural sedimentary limestone and features a tall octagonal shaft that is battered at the base. At the top, there is a stone cross with a gable, all standing on two square stone plinths and a stone base.
The upper plinth, which faces north, bears the inscription "WE DIED FOR ENGLAND. SEE THAT YOU LIVE FOR HER" and "TO THE MEMORY OF HASLEMERE MEN WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919." The names of the fallen are carved into the sides of the lower plinth. Additionally, three metal plaques on the upper plinth, located on the south, east, and west sides, commemorate those who fell in the Second World War. The total cost of the War Memorial was £362.
