Description

The Pumping Station Building and Engine is a mid-19th century structure located on Markfield Road in Tottenham. It is constructed of stock brick and consists of two sections. The lower left part features overhanging eaves, a ground floor with three bays of arcading, and three louvred round-arched lights above. The heads of the windows are glazed, while the lower parts are bricked up. There is a lean-to extension on the left side. A projecting buttress connects to the taller right section, which has a high round-arched opening that is also bricked up. The right return has six bays of arcading, which are blocked as well.

Inside, the building houses a 100 horsepower compound beam engine from 1888, made by Wood Bros. of Sowerby Bridge. The engine features a 28-foot flywheel that is still movable and is currently undergoing restoration. The framework and platforms are made of cast iron, supported by fluted columns and a frieze with a palmette pattern. A fluted blocking course and brackets support the upper platform, while the valve housing is designed in a short-columned Doric Order. The interior is arcaded and retains its original iron glazing bars, complete with angle paterae.
