Description

The War Memorial, erected in 1923, features a bronze statue of an angel representing Peace, created by L.F. Roslyn RBS. The statue stands on a shaft and base made of grey Cornish granite from the Kit Hill quarry in Callington, crafted by W. Griffiths and Sons Ltd. The laurel-crowned angel has outstretched wings and stands on a hemispherical globe while holding a wreath. The front of her gown is decorated with reliefs of angels. The tapering shaft displays a bronze sword on the front and reliefs of garlands with fillets on each face at the top. The main inscription reads, "Erected by the inhabitants of TOTTENHAM in grateful memory of her sons who fell in the Great War 1914-1918 1939-1945." The stepped base has additional inscriptions: to the south, "Greater love hath no man than this"; to the west, "Their name liveth for evermore"; and to the east, "Pass not without remembrance." The memorial is flanked by granite corner posts with chains.

The memorial was unveiled by HRH Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, on 17th June 1923, in front of approximately 40,000 people. It was commissioned by Tottenham District Council at a cost of £2,000 and is located in a prominent position near the town hall. Over 35,000 men from the area served in the Great War, with more than 2,000 losing their lives. A memorial fund was established in July 1922 to raise the necessary funds through public subscription.
