Description

The Former Tottenham Public Baths, built in 1905 by A S Taylor and R Jemmett, is now a community hall and public baths. This building is designed in the Edwardian Baroque style and features English bond red brick with Portland stone bands and dressings, along with hipped Welsh slate roofs and brick stacks topped with moulded stone caps. It stands three storeys tall and has a 2:3:2 window arrangement, with a taller central block that is set forward.

The central block's ground floor is made of ashlar and includes rusticated Tuscan pilasters and semi-circular arches with prominent keystones. This frames a central window flanked by original half-glazed double doors on the left and mid-20th century double doors on the right, both set in panelled reveals. The ground floor also features 9-pane sash windows and a mid-20th century door on the right, all within a square-headed rusticated architrave. The first floor has 12-pane sashes set in eared architraves beneath pulvinated friezes, with cornices on the outer bays and pediments at the centre. The second floor has 9-pane sashes also set in eared architraves.

A modillioned cornice runs along the top, with an open pediment over the central bay that contains a semi-circular arched window with a prominent keystone. The original rainwater heads feature modillioned cornices and ball pendants. A central moulded string course continues beneath the parapets of the two outer blocks, which have rusticated segmental arches over half-glazed double doors on the left and an open pediment above a 9-pane sash on the right. The pool roof includes a louvred ventilator and glazed strip lights, while a chimney for the boiler house is located at the rear.

Inside, there are offices at the front of two pools, with one pool now converted into a community hall. This building is one of three municipal structures originally interconnected by iron gateways, constructed for Tottenham Borough Council.
