Description
The Church of St Bartholomew is a parish church built in 1904 by the architect Caröe. It replaced a 19th-century church on Moor Lane, which was itself a successor to Sir Christopher Wren's original St Bartholomew's Church by the Bank. The current church features a font cover and pulpit attributed to the renowned carver Grinling Gibbons.
This cruciform church has aisles and is characterized by its long, low proportions. It is constructed of red brick with freestone dressings and has tiled roofs. The design is in a free Tudor style with Art Nouveau details. The nave and aisle parapets rise over buttresses, and the windows display a variety of tracery styles. A bellcote with a shingled spire is located at the crossing, and there is an extended ridge overhanging the bell at the west end, along with a small, half-octagonal projection.
Inside, the church features a long nave with arcade arches that are four-centred and lack capitals. Instead, they have an incurving hollow chamfer that serves as clerestory corbels. The undercroft at the east end includes a chapel with rib-vaulting of an early 13th-century style that connects directly to the piers. There is a gallery at the west end and slanted access from the side chapels to the sanctuary. The church also boasts well-crafted moulded and embattled timber roofs.
