Description
Nos 81 and 83 on Stoke Newington Church Street are an early to mid-18th century pair of buildings, originally three storeys and a basement, with an upper storey added in the 19th century above the frieze and cornice. Number 81 features three windows, while number 83 has four, with the right bay over a carriageway. The buildings are constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings, and the ground floors and basements are stuccoed with incised lining. The top parapet coping is made of red brick and stone.
The replaced sash windows, which have glazing bars, are located on the first and second floors and are set under finely gauged shallow segmental brick arches. Number 83 has lengthened first-floor windows that lead to early 19th-century cast iron balconies. The doors are of five fielded panels; number 81 has a handsome doorcase with a panelled reveal, enriched eared architrave, a frieze with garlands and a mask, and an enriched cornice and pediment on carved consoles. Number 83 features a later Greek revival doorcase with panelled pilasters, a garland and paterae frieze, and a mutule cornice. Curved wrought iron handrails lead to the doorsteps.
Nos 75 to 93 (odd) form a group with the forecourt walls to number 91.
