Description
The walls, gate-piers, railings, and gate at the south end of Abney Park Cemetery date from the 18th century. The walls and gate-piers are original, while the railings and gate were likely lost during the Second World War and were restored around 1982 to match the original design.
The structure features a mix of red and yellow brick walls laid in either Flemish or header bond, with stuccoed piers and walls beneath the railings. The gate and railings are made of cast iron, and there is one surviving stone ball finial out of two originally present.
The layout includes a central gate with an overthrow, flanked by low stuccoed walls that have cast iron spear railings. These railings feature urn finials at intervals and central scrolled panels that end in square stuccoed piers with moulded cornices. The eastern pier has a stone ball finial, while the western pier was missing its finial at the time of the survey. Curved sections of brick wall in header bond are attached to the piers, with some upper parts renewed, leading to straight sections in Flemish bond, which are also partly renewed.
A later 20th-century brick wall and steps on the north side are not included in the listing.
