Description
The monument to James Braidwood is located in Abney Park Cemetery. It is a stone pedestal featuring a coved frieze and a terminal adorned with a wreath. This monument was erected in memory of James Braidwood, who lived from 1800 to 1861 and was a prominent fireman known for his significant contributions to the firefighting profession. He served as the superintendent of the Fire Engine Establishment starting in 1832 and tragically lost his life in the Tooley Street fire on June 22, 1861. He was buried in this cemetery on June 29, 1861, and is remembered as a national hero. The monument is listed for its historical significance.
