Description
The monument to John Jay, who lived from 1805 to 1872, is located in Abney Park Cemetery. It features a white marble sarcophagus with an intricate moulded cover, lions' feet, and ornate acanthus decoration at the corners. John Jay was a prominent City contractor and, in 1840, he was the mason who built the chapel at Abney Park Cemetery, which was designed by William Hosking and is also listed. It is possible that the sarcophagus was carved in Jay's own workshop.
