Description
The Stoke Newington Civilian War Memorial is made of Portland stone and features a wall with four panels set within a hollow-chamfered frame. At the top, there is a raised rectangular panel with a central carved badge. The inscription on this panel reads: "METROPOLITAN BOROUGH OF STOKE NEWINGTON / TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES THROUGH ENEMY ACTION IN THE BOROUGH DURING WORLD WAR 1939-1945 AND IN PARTICULAR OF THOSE WHOSE NAMES ARE INSCRIBED ON THIS MEMORIAL / DEATH IS BUT CROSSING THE WORLD AS FRIENDS DO THE SEA - THEY LIVE IN ONE ANOTHER STILL." The four inset panels contain leaded lists of the locations of the air raids and the names of the deceased. In front of the memorial, there is an area marked by stone kerbing, which includes spaces for planting. Three shallow steps lead up the center of this area towards the memorial, and at the top, there is a ledge with a pair of simple stone flower vases.
