Description
Nos 85 and 87 on Stoke Newington Church Street are an early to mid-18th century pair of buildings, originally three storeys and a basement, with three windows each. An additional storey was added in the mid-19th century. They are constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings and feature a frieze and cornice at the third floor level. The later sash windows, some with glazing bars, are adorned with finely-gauged shallow segmental brick arches. The parapet is capped with red brick and stone. The ground floors and basements are finished in stucco with incised lines.
No 85 has a door with five fielded panels, while No 87 has a modern door, both set in panelled reveals. The doorcases are impressive, featuring eared architraves decorated with egg-and-dart moulding, friezes with garlands and central masks, and a cornice and pediment that are console bracketed, moulded, and dentilled. No 85 also has lengthened first floor windows that lead to early 19th century cast iron balconies.
These buildings, along with Nos 75 to 93 (odd), form a group with the forecourt walls to No 91.
