Description

This is an early 19th-century terrace of six houses, numbered 228 to 232 on Mare Street. Each house is three storeys high with a basement, and has three windows. The exterior is made of stock brick with a stone sill band at first-floor level, a cornice band, and a stone-coped parapet. Late 19th-century sash windows are set within stucco surrounds and have brick arches above.

Numbers 228 and 230 have modern steps leading to front doors. These are paired doors, with six and four panels respectively, recessed within a panelled surround and topped with a fluted head and a fanlight in a narrow architrave. The door surround is framed by a stucco entablature. Number 228 has a patterned, radial fanlight. Number 232 has modern steps leading to a door made of five panels with panelled pilasters and side lights, topped with a fluted head. Above the door is a cornice and parapet, all contained within a wide recess under a round, gauged brick arch.

The terrace has group value, as it forms a cohesive group with numbers 224 to 232.
