Description
No. 226 on Mare Street is an early 19th-century building that has undergone some alterations. It stands three storeys tall with a basement that is now covered over, featuring three windows. The building is constructed of stock brick and has a stone cornice band, a cill band on the first floor, and a stone-coped parapet. The window arches on the first and second floors have been rebuilt using flettons, and the windows are late 19th-century sashes. The ground floor retains an original flat gauged brick arch. The entrance door has five panels and is flanked by panelled pilasters and sidelights, topped with a fluted head. Above the door section, there is a parapet and cornice, all set within a wide recess under a round gauged brick arch. A wrought iron handrail leads up a flight of five steps. This building is part of a group with Nos. 224 to 232, which share historical and architectural significance.
