Description

This is a large corner building dating from around 1900, situated at the junction of Mare Street and Darnley Road. It has three bays facing Mare Street, five bays facing Darnley Road, and a projecting corner with a half-octagonal turret topped by a copper ogee dome supported on Ionic columns. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings. Notable features include a strapwork frieze on the turret, rusticated window architraves, and heavy bracketed cornice hoods over the doorways. The high-pitched tiled roof is punctuated by tall chimneys with stone cornices and wide, pedimented gables; one faces Mare Street and the other faces Darnley Road. The ground floor features wide, round-arched openings in ashlar. A tall, canted ashlar bay is located at the south end of the building.
