Description

This is a row of two early 19th-century pairs of houses, numbered 16 to 19 Clapton Square. Each pair is three storeys high with an attic and basement, and originally contained two windows. The roofs are slated and hipped, with dormers, although No. 6 has been tiled. The exterior is of stock brick with a stone-coped parapet. The ground floor windows have gauged brick arches set within round-arched recesses, while the windows above have flat arches. These windows are sash windows with glazing bars. There are one-storey stuccoed entrance links at either side, featuring a cornice and blocking course. No. 16 and No. 19 have lost their original architrave heads, and No. 16 has a modern door. All doors have fanlights, with those of Nos. 17 and 19 featuring interlaced bars resting on a cornice head and flanked by fluted pilasters. The railings belonging to Nos. 7 to 19, and also No. 13A, are considered to form a group with No. 17 Lower Clapton Road.
