33-35, CORNHILL EC3

Nos 33 to 35 Cornhill, built in 1857 by Francis and Francis, is an ornate classical corner building made of Portland stone. It has four storeys plus a basement and a two-storey mansard roof. The facade features six windows with a return of four windows. The ground storey is marked by an order of rusticated Doric columns, with elaborate arched entrances at either end, each crowned by segmental pediments. The first-floor windows are balustraded and flanked by engaged Corinthian columns and pediments. The windows above are pilastered and corniced, with arches on the third floor. A large entablature with brackets supports a frieze, and the stone lower dormers are pedimented. The building has a metal roof with cresting. At the rear, there is a plainer three-bay wing facing Birchin Lane, constructed of brick and stone.
