Description
The Australia and New Zealand Banking Group building, located at 71 Cornhill, was constructed in 1896, possibly by G. Cuthbert. It features an elaborate, mannered Greek style and consists of three main storeys plus a basement, with five windows across the façade. The ground storey is made of polished grey granite and includes a row of Ionic pilasters and incised ornamentation on the frieze of the entablature. The central doorway is corniced. The upper part of the building is finished in Portland stone, with Corinthian pilasters on the first floor that are adorned with decorative carvings in the tympana of segmental relieving arches. The top storey is distinguished by terminal figures that support a large, enriched cornice. The building is topped with a high, curved roof covered in copper, which is set back from the front.
