Description
No 39 on Cornhill, dating from the mid to late 19th century, is designed in a rich classical style. The building is constructed from Portland stone and features polished pink and grey granite. It stands three storeys tall, plus stone dormers, and has five windows. The ground storey is marked by an order of engaged Doric columns and pilasters on a high base, with pediments at either end. The first floor has a similar order, with balustraded and pedimented windows. The top storey is pilastered, topped with a parapet, and has part balustrading interrupted by stone dormers. The former No 42, also from the mid 19th century, is a tall, narrow building with a longer return elevation to St Michaels Alley. It is made of painted stone and polished pink granite, rising five storeys plus dormers, each featuring an order of pilasters and smaller pilasters serving as window mullions.
