Description
Jamaica Wine House, located in Jamaica Buildings, is a late 19th-century building featuring red brick and red stone. It has a three-storey section with a garret storey, consisting of five bays, along with a single-storey extension to the south. The main elevation facing St Michael's Alley is symmetrical with three bays and a central entrance to the wine house, flanked by slightly projecting canted bays that have slim Gothic colonettes as mullions. The upper two storeys are similar, adorned with carved ornamental panels above the windows. Access to these upper storeys is provided by a separate entrance labeled 'Jamaica Buildings' in the northern bay.
A link block, designed in a similar style, connects this building to the church of St Michael, Cornhill. This link incorporates a vaulted passage at ground floor level, allowing access through round-arched openings to the church and churchyard. The link features Gothic detailing to match the church and is dated 1868, part of the alterations made to the church by the architect George Edmund Street. The rear elevation facing the churchyard is constructed of plain red brick. The single-storey extension of the wine house to the south is designed in an Art Nouveau style, characterized by slim piers of red sandstone. The south elevation consists of four bays, featuring two large arched windows separated by narrow bays with ornamented panels above that contain circular lights.
