Description
Simpson's Tavern, located at No 4 Castle Court, is an early 18th century or possibly late 17th century pair of houses. Each house has four storeys and three windows. The exterior is made of red brick, featuring a band below the top storey and a parapet at the roof. The shop front is pilastered with a cornice and pediments, likely added in the late 19th century. There is a passage beneath No 5 that leads to Ball Court. The rear elevation is made of painted brick, with segmental arches and an altered roof. Simpson's Tavern has a two-storey wing along the west side of the court, with a short return over the passage at the far end, constructed of plain, painted brick. The shop front is similar to that of Castle Court but includes shallow bow windows and is likely from the late 18th or early 19th century. There are also some later 19th century decorated glass features and a gas lamp on a cast iron bracket. This building is notable as an example of a city tavern.
