Description
The Church of St Edmund, built between 1670 and 1679 by Sir Christopher Wren, is a Grade I listed building located on Lombard Street, EC3. It features a simple rectangular structure that includes a south tower and a shallow chancel to the north. The exterior is made of Portland stone and has round-arched windows. The east elevation is corniced and currently has three windows. The south door is also corniced and is flanked by low rectangular openings, with three larger windows above. The building is topped with a cornice that has a central pediment and a parapet that rises to the tower, which is adorned with urns. A central, bracketed clock is present on the tower. The upper stage of the tower features large single openings and a bracketed cornice, which is topped by a parapet and urns. The tower is capped with a lead-covered octagonal lantern and spire. The chancel has an open pediment, while the north elevation is obscured by adjacent buildings.
Inside, the church has a plain interior with blind arched panels that echo the window pattern. The ceiling is coved with a semi-vault in the chancel. The tower is flanked by lobbies that have an altered gallery above. Original fittings include a well-crafted reredos, pulpit, communion table and rails, doorcases, stalls, an organ case in two parts, and a font with a cover and rails, along with wainscot. The church also features paintings of Moses and Aaron and various wall tablets. A modern vestry is located at the east end.
