Description

The Midland Bank, located at 5-6 Threadneedle Street, was originally built in 1856, possibly by W. Mosely. This classical building sits on a corner site and is constructed from Portland stone, featuring four main storeys. The façade facing Threadneedle Street has one window, while the Finch Lane side has four. The ground storey is rusticated and includes decorative iron grilles on the windows, topped by a crowning entablature. The entrance, located at the rounded corner, is flanked by a pair of Doric columns, with a lunette and carving above. The first-floor windows are pedimented and balustraded, and there is a large, bracketed cornice.

The building has been extended to the east (No 6) and to the rear along Finch Lane. The Threadneedle Street elevation features five bays, with ground floor windows set between rusticated piers and iron grilles. The round-headed door is adorned with Doric pilasters and an entablature, topped with a cherub head keystone, a broken segmental pediment, and an inset scrolled pediment with a coat of arms. The first-floor windows have stone balconies and alternate between segmental and triangular pediments. The upper floors are detailed with quoins and cill bands, and there is a simple cornice. The Finch Lane elevation is a plainer continuation of the Threadneedle Street design and is not of special interest.
