Description
The Tower and remains of the Church of All Hallows Staining date from the 12th or 13th century onwards. The lowest stage of the tower is constructed from coursed ragstone rubble with some knapped flint, likely from the 12th or 13th century. It features a two-light cinquefoil window in the west wall and pointed arches in the south and east walls. The second stage of the tower, along with fragmentary remains of a diagonal buttress and the south and west walls of the south aisle or nave, are probably from the 14th century. An octagonal stair turret at the north-west corner of the tower, which includes four-centre head doorways to four internal stages, is likely from the 15th century. The second stage has cinquefoil windows that have been restored externally but retain 16th-century brickwork internally. Parts of the brickwork in the third stage date from the 18th century. The upper third and fourth stages were restored following the demolition of the main body of the church in 1870.
