Description

Numbers 20 and 21 on Platt Street, along with their railings, form part of a terrace of ten houses built around 1840. These houses are now individually numbered maisonettes. The buildings are constructed of stock brick with a stuccoed ground floor featuring channelled rustication, and they have slate roofs that are hidden behind parapets. Each house is two bays wide, with the entrance to Nos. 20 and 21 located on the right side, and they have doors on the return. The houses are three storeys tall and include basements. All windows are 12-pane sashes, with those on the upper floors set under gauged brick heads, while the ground floor windows are under channelled voussoirs. The authentic doors are framed by square pilaster doorcases and topped with dentilled lintels and arched toplights. No. 21 features a projecting porch and has blind windows on the return side. Wrought-iron balconies are present on the first floor. Although Nos. 12 and 13 are a facsimile rebuild, and some rebuilding has also occurred at Nos. 4 and 5, these alterations have been done with care. The interiors have not been inspected but are noted to retain original staircases and other features.
