Description
Public conveniences built around 1889-1894, designed by the London County Council Architects' Department. The building features a brick plinth that rises to one third of its height, with timber framing above. It has a tiled gableted roof adorned with decorative finials, overhanging bracketed eaves, and gabled dormers that include bargeboards and crested ridge tiles on the central projecting gabled roof. The structure has a rectangular plan and is a single storey with a symmetrical design.
A central canted bay window, featuring glazing bars and small panes in the top horizontal lights, is positioned under a large projecting gable. Flanking bays have similarly glazed 2-light windows, and the entrances are located in the angles of the projecting returns. The returns and rear facade include high-placed windows with glazing bars.
Inside, both sides are similar, with attendants' rooms located in the canted bay, accessed through half-glazed panelled stable-type doors. The walls are lined with original white tiles, partly featuring a moulded brown ceramic dado rail. The cubicles have outward opening plank doors with gaps at the top and bottom. The matchboard ceilings are illuminated by the gabled dormers, and there are working gas lights around the walls with frosted glass shades. The sanitary equipment is from the 20th century.
Historically, this building was likely constructed as part of the London County Council's municipal improvement campaign for Hampstead Heath, which raised concerns about preserving the Heath's natural charm.
