Description

Toll Gate House is an 18th-century toll gate house that was restored in 1967. It is built of painted brick with a cement dado and features a tiled hipped roof with a tall chimney stack and pot on the north side. The building has a rectangular plan and is a single storey high, with one window on each of the three sides facing the road. The north side has a segmental arched entrance, which is approached by four steps. To the left of the entrance, there is a low round-arched protruding tunnel with two-leaf wooden doors. The windows are segmental arched and have shutters, although the north window is now covered by a large plaque. The building also features a brick dentil eaves cornice. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this toll house marks the location where the road entered the estate of the Bishop of London. The restoration of the building won a Civic Trust award. It is also listed in the London Borough of Barnet and is located on the common boundary of the London Boroughs of Barnet and Camden. The asset was previously listed twice under the parish of Hampstead, but that entry was removed from the list on July 17, 2015.
