GV II

Toll gate house. C18, restored 1967. Painted brick with cement dado. Tiled hipped roof with tall chimney-stack and pot on north side. Rectangular plan. Single storey with 1 window on each of 3 sides facing the road. Segmental arched entrance on north side, approached by 4 steps to the left of which a low round-arched protruding tunnel with 2-leaf wooden doors. Segmental arched windows with shutters, the north window now covered by a large plaque. Brick dentil eaves cornice. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORICAL NOTE: the toll house marks the spot where the road entered the Bishop of London's estate. The restoration won a Civic Trust award. Also listed in the LB of Barnet and on the common boundary of the London Boroughs of Barnet and Camden.
