Description

Casa Maria, The Chantry, and The White House comprise two semi-detached houses, originally built around 1734 by John Turner, a wealthy Fleet Street draper. The houses were substantially rebuilt in the early 19th century as a semi-detached pair, featuring an irregular facade. Later, they were converted into a single house (The Firs) and then, in the 1950s, separated again into two residences. A third residence, Casa Maria, in a Spanish style, was created by adapting the former billiard room.

The houses are constructed of stuccoed exterior with plain pilasters. The Chantry section has three windows, while The White House has two and a three-window bay. Both sections are fronted by prostyle Tuscan porticoes. The doorways feature patterned fanlights and panelled doors. The windows are recessed sash windows with glazing bars. The houses are finished with a cornice and blocking course. The interior has not been inspected.

Attached railings are present at The Chantry. The buildings were initially listed with Camden in 1974, with The White House subsequently added to the Barnet list in 1983. Following boundary revisions on 1 April 1994, both properties are now wholly within the London Borough of Barnet.
