Description
The Toll House is an early 19th-century toll house located on the east side of Thorney Road in Kingsbury Episcopi. It is constructed of red brick, which has been whitewashed, and features a hipped slate roof on both sides and over a projecting bay. A large brick chimney stack is situated on the right side of the roof, with stone ridge slabs. The building is single-storey and has a canted bay that projects slightly forward at the center, giving it a diminutive scale. There are four small casement windows with glazing bars, each with wooden lintels. The central doorway is located on the outer face of the bay and features a pointed entrance with a six-panel door. Additionally, there are pointed blocked recesses in the side walls. This toll house was part of the Langport, Somerton, and Castle Cary Turnpike Trust.
