Description
This is a terrace of ten houses, numbers 4 to 20 Jeffrey’s Street, and number 10 Prowse Place. The houses date to the early 19th century. They are built of yellow brick, with the second floors largely refaced, and stuccoed ground floors; numbers 12 to 20 have rusticated ground floor facades, and number 20 has a cement-faced front. The buildings are three storeys high, with basements. Each house has two windows. The ground floor has round-arched openings. The doorways have cornice heads; numbers 4, 6, and 10 have fluted quarter columns, fanlights (number 20 has a patterned fanlight, number 6 has intersecting tracery), and panelled doors. A 20th-century entrance is located at number 10 Prowse Place. The ground floor windows are recessed sashes, with numbers 6, 12, 14, and 20 featuring intersecting tracery. Upper floors have recessed sashes with segmental arches, except for numbers 8 to 14, which have stuccoed flat arches. All houses have cast-iron balconies to the first-floor windows, and parapets. The interior has not been inspected. Attached cast-iron railings with urn or acorn finials define the areas. Number 10 Prowse Place was originally numbered as number 2 Jeffrey’s Street and was listed separately on January 30, 1976.
