Description
Torrington is a detached house built between 1876 and 1878 by Batterbury and Huxley for Dr Andrew Miller. A later rear extension has been added. The house is constructed of red Fareham bricks with terracotta detailing and brick floor bands. It has a tiled hipped roof with three tall chimney stacks. These have segmental pediments above panels featuring rubbed brick festoons; those on the left return, overlooking Hampstead Hill Gardens, rise from full-height chimney breasts. A dentil eaves cornice runs around the building.
The house is three storeys high, with an attic and a semi-basement. The round-arched entrance is made of rubbed brick and features Ionic pilasters supporting a segmental pediment, above a 20th-century panelled door. Gauged brick flat arches surround the flush frame sashes. A three-window bowed bay rises from the basement through the first and second floors, with a central pediment featuring an oculus, flanked by rubbed brick festoons. The left-hand return has a rubbed brick pedimented plaque with a cartouche on the right-hand chimney breast.
The interior has not been inspected.
Attached to the property is a plum-coloured brick wall with gate piers inscribed "Torrington". These piers are surmounted by ball finials and have a cast and wrought-iron gate.
No. 12 Torrington is part of a wider development by Batterbury and Huxley, including several other listed buildings along Hampstead Hill Gardens.
