Description

This is a detached studio house, later sub-divided into numbers 2 and 2a, built in 1881 by Batterbury & Huxley. It is constructed of red brick with a plain band marking the first floor. The building has a tiled hipped roof with a gable, a pedimented dormer, tall, prominent chimney-stacks, and a coved eaves cornice incorporating moulded plaster festoons. The house has two storeys, an attic, and a basement. The front elevation is irregular, featuring a two-window recessed extension to the left, a three-window canted bay, a single window above the entrance, and a three-window projecting gabled bay to the right. To the far right is a single-storey extension projecting above a semi-basement, featuring a large, Venetian-style studio window. The round-arched entrance is constructed of rubbed brick and incorporates fluted Ionic pilasters supporting an entablature with a swag-enriched frieze. It has a panelled door with a fanlight and sidelights. The windows are flush frame sashes, with the top half glazed in a grid pattern; those on the ground floor have patterned glazing. The first-floor canted bay features casements with three-light heads. The interior was not inspected. The property is surrounded by low brick walls with stone capping, and fitted with good cast and wrought-iron railings featuring elaborate scrolled standards with urn finials. A good cast and wrought-iron gate, also with scrolled standards and an overthrow displaying entwined initials and the date 1881, completes the subsidiary features.
