Description

Numbers 1, 1A, and 1B, including the Studio House, are a large detached house and studio, built in 1875-6 and altered in 1883. They were designed by Batterbury & Huxley for J Ingle Lee and are situated on a corner plot. The house is constructed of plum-coloured brick with red brick dressings, featuring plain bands at floor levels, and has a hipped tiled roof with dormers, tall slab chimney stacks, and projecting eaves. The house is set diagonally on the corner plot, with its entrance front facing Rosslyn Hill.

It is two storeys high with an attic and a semi-basement, and has two windows on the front elevation. The round-arched rubbed brick doorway has panelled pilasters with fluted capitals and a pediment, above a panelled door with a fanlight. Gauged brick flat arches frame the flush framed sash windows, which have exposed boxing. A rubbed brick plaque reads “Built AD1876”. A two-window bay rises through the basement and ground floor, set diagonally across the corner. A long return to Hampstead Hill Gardens includes the Studio House, which features a tall sash studio window terminating in a gable, above which is a ridge lantern. A projecting part-glazed bay runs along the first-floor return.

The interior of the house has not been inspected. During the late 1940s, the Studio House served as the headquarters of the Hampstead Artists Council.
