Description
No. 40 New End Square is a terraced house built around 1815 and refronted in the mid-19th century. The exterior is finished in stucco and features a plain band at the first floor level. The house has a steeply gabled roof at the rear and stands three storeys tall with two windows. It includes a prostyle Tuscan portico that has a panelled door and an overlight. The windows are architraved sashes with lugged sills, and the ground and first floors have console bracketed cornices. A parapet completes the façade.
Historically, during the 1860s, Alfred Lord Tennyson lived here and frequently visited his mother until her death in 1865. From 1932, the house became the home of artist and Slade tutor George Charlton, who often welcomed Stanley Spencer as a visitor. The interior has not been inspected.
