Description

This is a detached house built around 1812. It is of stucco construction with a pebble-dash finish to the first and second floors, and has a slated roof. The house has three storeys and a semi-basement, with a double-fronted facade featuring three windows. A prostyle Doric portico, with a dentil cornice, provides the main entrance. The doorway is round-arched, with a fluted surround, sidelights, a radial fanlight, and a panelled door, all accessed by steps. The windows are recessed sash windows, with console-bracketed dentil cornices and pediments, along with cast-iron guards, to the ground floor; the first floor windows have cambered heads and cast-iron balconies. Continuous plain sill bands are present on the upper floors. The interior remains uninspected. A historical note indicates that Captain Richard Jesse, of the Royal Navy, who resided here in the 1860s, married Emily, daughter of the poet Tennyson.
