Description
No. 31 is a house built around 1840-1850, featuring stucco on stone rubble with end stacks that have plastered brick chimney shafts topped with old pots, and a slate roof. The house has a double-depth plan and is one room wide. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has a two-window front designed in a restrained Domestic Tudor style.
The doorway on the right is framed by a stucco Tuscan doorcase, with flat pilasters and a moulded entablature supported by shallow console brackets. This doorway is slightly recessed and accessed by a couple of stone steps, containing an original panelled door with upper fielded panels (the top two are now glazed) and lower panels featuring vertical mouldings, along with a narrow plain overlight above. The windows are adorned with Tudor-style hoodmoulds and blocks beneath the sills, featuring horned 12-pane sashes. The eaves cornice is a replacement moulded timber version. The roof is parallel to the adjoining properties and includes 20th-century flat-roofed dormers at both the front and back.
The rear elevation, which is plastered, has lost its original stucco detail. The basement has a two-bay arcade with a central circular column that has a moulded capital, now filled with 20th-century windows. The ground floor features tall 12-pane sashes with an unusual horizontal glazing pattern, while the first floor has replacement sashes without glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
Additionally, there is a stone revetment wall above Browns Hill, topped with original cast-iron spear-headed railings. This house is part of a prominent terrace that overlooks the town.
