Description
Alma Cottage is a house that underwent renovation in 1889, as indicated by a date plaque, and is believed to have originated from an earlier structure dating back to 1653, which is noted on a plaque reset in the side wall. The building is constructed of plastered stone rubble, with the front featuring plaster that mimics ashlar. It has disused stacks and a flat roof.
The house has a single-depth plan, consisting of two rooms wide with a central entrance passage and rear stairs situated between them. The exterior is three storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window front. The outer windows are horned four-pane sashes, while the center windows are narrow, round-headed windows that also contain horned sashes but lack glazing bars. The central doorway features a timber replacement pedimented doorcase and a part-glazed door. There is a plat band at the first-floor level and a pilaster at the right end. A shield-shaped plaque in the center of the second floor is inscribed in Lombardic script, commemorating the renovation of 1889. The deep eaves are supported by shaped timber brackets, and there are cast-iron railings along the parapet. The right end pilaster is moulded at the top and chamfered at the bottom corner. A stone corner plaque displays the street names. The right return of the building is blind to Clarence Hill and features the 1653 date plaque with the initials "H.A.C."
The interior of the ground floor has been modernized in the 20th century, with no exposed historical features and a rebuilt staircase. Alma Cottage was formerly the servants' cottage for Alma, located at No.19 Browns Hill. It is an important part of the group of listed buildings on Clarence Hill near the top of Browns Hill.
