Description

The rear boundary wall, which includes a gateway to No. 1 Mount Boone (though No. 1 itself is not included in this listing), is a boundary wall of uncertain date. It was already in place by the mid-18th century, as shown in a topographical painting, and may have been used during the Civil War. The wall is constructed of stone rubble with granite coping, and one section features some 18th-century brick. It is a tall, crenellated wall, generally around 2 meters high but significantly taller in some areas, topped with ridged granite coping. Most of the front wall has been replaced, but a portion remains adjacent to No. 1 Mount Boone.

As the wall curves onto Mount Boone Hill, it features a large gateway with square piers made of red sandstone ashlar, which have chamfered corners, stepped caps, and large ball finials. The wall follows the irregular line of Mount Boone Hill and extends along the back of the gardens on Mount Boone Lane, where several gateways have been created. Some sections have been rebuilt, and some have lost their coping, but most of the wall remains intact. One section includes 18th-century brick within the embattled granite coping, and in certain areas, the granite coping is more elaborate, with mouldings that return up and down the merlons and embrasures. This wall was originally built as the boundary for Mount Boone, the 18th-century home of the Seale family, which has since been demolished, and the grounds have been developed into a row of Edwardian villas, numbered 1 to 16 Mount Boone.
