Description

This is a house dating from the 1840s and 1850s. It was originally built with stucco on a stone rubble base, but the rear has been finished with roughcast. The roof is slate-covered. The building has a double-depth plan, with one room wide. The front of the house is two storeys and an attic, with a restrained Domestic Tudor style and a two-window arrangement. The doorway on the right, originally with a stucco surround, now contains a good panelled door with fielded panels, the top two now glazed, and vertical mouldings to the bottom panels; it has a narrow plain overlight above. The windows have Tudor-style hoodmoulds and blocks under the sills. The first-floor window on the right has been replaced with a 4-pane sash; the others are original 12-pane sashes. There is an original moulded timber eaves cornice. The roof is gable-ended to the left and includes 20th-century flat-roofed dormers at the front and back. The roughcast rear has lost its stucco detail and has a two-bay arcade to the basement, with a central circular column with a moulded capital, now containing 20th-century windows. The ground floor has tall 12-pane sashes with an unusual horizontal glazing pattern (only 2 panes wide), while the first floor has conventional 12-pane sashes. Again, there is an original moulded timber eaves cornice. The interior was not inspected but is likely to be of interest. The property has a stone revetment wall to the terrace above Browns Hill, topped with cast-iron spear-headed railings. It is part of a prominent terrace overlooking the town.
