Description

No. 30 is a house located on Browns Hill in Dartmouth, built around 1840 to 1850 and renovated around 1990. It features a mix of construction materials, primarily plastered stone rubble, with some areas of plastered timber-framing, and has plastered brick end stacks topped with old pots. The roof is slate and hipped to the right.

The house has a plan that is two rooms wide and one room deep, with a central front doorway leading to the stairs. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has a symmetrical two-window front. The plastered front displays a shallow jetty at the first-floor level. The central doorway is framed with stucco and has a flat architrave supported by shallow console brackets. The doorway is recessed and accessed by three stone steps, featuring a replacement panelled door with a narrow plain overlight above. The windows are horned 12-pane sashes without hoodmoulds, which distinguishes them from the adjoining houses on Clarence Hill.

At the rear, the house has a three-window range with 16-pane sashes in the basement and a doorway to the right that contains a good original panelled door with vertical mouldings on the bottom panels. The ground floor has tall 12-pane sashes with an unusual horizontal glazing pattern, only two panes wide, while the first floor has conventional 12-pane sashes. The eaves cornice is likely a replacement.

The interior has not been inspected but is expected to be of interest. Additionally, there are cast-iron spear-headed railings on top of a stone revetment wall at the rear of the property. No. 30 is the end house in a contemporary terrace of five, which includes Nos. 27-33 on Clarence Hill and is positioned towards the top of the valley, overlooking the town centre, from which the rear elevation is clearly visible.
