Description

Numbers 108-132 form a terrace of 13 houses, with 4 incorporating shops, built in the mid-1820s. The construction is of stock brick and stucco, with slate roofs. The terrace is three storeys high, with basements, though No. 112 has a later, non-original mansard roof added. Each house is generally two windows wide, except for No. 108, which is one window wide. Doors leading to the right are accessed via steps over the basement areas, with entrances also located on the side returns for the end houses. The ground floors and basements are stuccoed, featuring banded rustication that acts as keystones over the openings. The upper windows have 12- and 8-light glazing bar sashes. The ground floor windows have varied fenestration, including margin lights to No. 120 and round-arched windows to the others. Nos. 114 and 130 have 12 lights and central round-arched glazing bars, while Nos. 116 and 122 have modern casement windows of no particular interest. Original doors remain in most properties, except for No. 122. The doorcases feature engaged, fluted pilasters and semicircular toplights, with No. 130 having a decorative fanlight. Nos 108, 110, 112 and 132 have shopfronts; those to Nos 108 and 132 are particularly noteworthy examples from the early 19th century, each with corner entrances. No. 108 has a moulded eaves cornice, a deep frieze, engaged unmoulded pilasters and small panels beneath the 6- and 4-light windows, which themselves feature thin mullions and central transoms. No. 132 has a simpler cornice and sides, with 12 and 10 smaller panes divided by slender glazing bars, also including margin lights to the top; the corner has a modern door with a square top-light. The shopfront to No. 114 has pleasing early 20th-century margin-light decoration and a contemporary door. The interiors were not inspected, but many are reported to retain original cornices, shutterboxes, and staircases. Spearhead railings define the basement areas and entrance steps in the properties without shopfronts. The terrace forms a strong and cohesive part of the townscape, especially visible from College Green.
