Description

Numbers 22 to 28 John Street comprise a terrace of seven houses, dating from around 1800 to 1900. The houses are built of yellow and multi-coloured stock brick with stucco bands at the first-floor levels. Numbers 27 and 28 have slated mansard roofs with dormers, while the others have flat roofs with parapets. The houses are four storeys high with basements, numbers 27 and 28 also having attics. Generally, each house has two windows, with numbers 26 and 27 each having three windows, and number 28 being double-fronted with five windows. The windows are recessed sashes, with many retaining glazing bars. The first floors have cast-iron balconies, except for number 28.

The doorways vary across the terrace. Numbers 22, 23, and 24 have square-headed, architraved doorways with patterned rectangular fanlights and panelled doors. Numbers 26 and 27 feature round-arched doorways with reeded doorframes, lion mask stops, mutule cornice-heads, patterned radial fanlights, and panelled doors; number 27 incorporates a lamp-holder in its fanlight, and number 26 has a fluted lead rainwater head. Number 28 has a round-arched doorway with attached Doric columns supporting an entablature, a patterned radial fanlight, and a panelled door, with a cornice and blocking course, and a wrought-iron overthrow lamp-holder. A return side to Northington Street shows one window and a mid-19th century entrance with a stucco surround and console-bracketed cornice, along with dentilled cornices.

Interior features noted include reeded marble fireplaces on the ground and first floors of number 22, and on the first and second floors of number 23 (with original centres covered). Number 24 retains marble fireplaces with original centres on the ground floor. Number 25 has marble fireplaces on the ground floor, and the first-floor front room features a good marble fireplace with a bas relief on the front panel, reeded detailing, rosettes, and an original iron centre.

Attached cast-iron railings with urn finials are found to the areas.
