Description

Terrace of 8 houses at numbers 2 to 9 John Street, Camden, built between 1754 and 1759 by J Blagrave with W Barlow, J Bosworth, S Room and R Meel. The buildings are constructed in multi-coloured stock brick with evidence of tuck pointing and later patching. They are 4 storeys high with basements, except number 6 which has attic dormers. Plain brick bands run across the 1st and 2nd floors of all houses except number 6. Each house has 3 windows, except number 6 which has 4. Windows are recessed sashes with gauged red brick flat arches, most retaining glazing bars. All houses have parapets.

Number 2 features a Greek Doric wooden doorcase with a mutule cornice, patterned fanlight and double panelled door, accompanied by a cast-iron overthrow with lamp. The interior retains panelled ground floor and good marble fireplaces on the ground and 1st floors, with modillion cornices. The staircase at the front has a cast-iron trellis pattern with continuous balustrade, and iron balustrade to stone stairs.

Number 3 has a round-arched doorway with architraved stucco surround, a small head on the keystone and panelled door. The interior retains a staircase with curly wrought-iron balusters in panels under continuous timber handrails.

Number 4 has a Doric wooden doorcase with open pediment, archivolt with keystone, arched fanlight and panelled door. An original lead rainwater head with lion mask is present. A large bay extends to the garden front. The interior is partly remodelled but retains stairs with turned balusters, shaped ends, column newels and scroll brackets to treads.

Number 5 has a wooden Ionic doorcase with modillion cornice, pediment, pulvinated frieze, panelled reveals and panelled door. An original lead rainwater head with lion mask and pipe is present. The house was refronted from mid 1st floor level and has a large bay to the garden front. The interior retains panelled rooms and original fireplaces, with a Chinese balustrade and scroll bracket to treads of stairs.

Number 6 was rebuilt in Neo-Georgian style and restored in 1989. It is slightly projecting and has a stone Greek Doric doorcase. Stone bands and iron balconies appear at 1st floor level, with a stone cyma bracketed cornice at 3rd floor.

Number 7 has a refaced ground floor. A 20th-century reproduction Doric wooden doorcase features a triglyph frieze, dentil cornice, open pediment, archivolt with keystone, radial fanlight and panelled door. A wrought-iron lamp-holder is mounted on the railings. The interior retains open well stairs with turned balusters and carved brackets to treads, and a plain moulded fireplace on the 1st floor.

Number 8 has a Doric wooden doorcase with triglyph frieze, dentil cornice, open pediment, archivolt with keystone, radial fanlight and panelled door. Cast-iron balconies are present to 1st floor windows, and a wrought-iron overthrow with lamp is mounted on the facade. The interior retains a carved wood fireplace to the 1st floor back room, an elliptical arch on fluted Ionic columns on the ground floor, and stairs with turned balusters and shaped ends.

Number 9 has a Doric wooden doorcase similar to number 8. The interior retains marble fireplaces on ground and 1st floor rooms with egg-and-dart mouldings, and stairs with turned balusters.

The terrace is bounded by attached cast-iron railings with torch flambe finials to the areas.
