Description
Eleven terraced houses on John Street in Camden, built between 1799 and 1824, with attached cast-iron railings. Number 20 has a facade rebuilt in facsimile around 1950.
The terrace is constructed in multi-coloured stock brick with yellow stock brick patching. Rusticated stucco grounds floors feature band details at first floor levels. Most houses have four storeys and basements with three windows each. Number 10 includes a three-window blind return to Northington Street. Number 20 is set back at three storeys and basement with two windows and a three-window return; it has a stucco facade to John Street with rusticated ground floor, and yellow stock brick to Roger Street, plus a two-storey, three-window rear extension.
Gauged brick flat arches (reddened at Number 10) frame recessed sash windows, mostly retaining glazing bars. Cast-iron balconies ornament the first floor windows of Numbers 12 to 19. Parapets crown the frontages. Original fluted lead rainwater heads and pipes are in place.
Doorways are characteristically round-arched with fanlights and panelled doors. Number 10 has a mutule cornice-head, sidelights and radial fanlight, with a moulded cornice to the parapet. Number 11 has a fanlight (the door being 20th-century replacement). Number 12 features a fluted surround, mutule cornice-head, radial fanlight and panelled double doors. Number 13 has a similar doorway. Number 14 has a patterned radial fanlight. Number 15, which projects slightly, has wooden attached Greek Doric columns carrying the cornice-head; its first floor windows sit in shallow round-arched recesses linked by moulded impost bands. Numbers 16, 17 and 18 have similar doorways to Number 12, with Numbers 17 and 18 displaying patterned radial fanlights. Number 19 has sidelights, fanlight and panelled door. Number 20 features a stucco entrance portico on the return with moulded cornice and parapet, radial fanlight and panelled double doors; the John Street elevation has pilasters rising through first and second floors carrying an entablature and blocking course, with architraved recessed casement windows on the ground and first floors featuring console-bracketed cornices.
Interiors retain important original features. Number 10 has a stick baluster stair in the entrance hall with modillion cornice. Number 11 retains a wooden fireplace with dentil cornice on the ground floor and marble fireplace on the first floor, with stairs featuring shaped balusters and shaped ends in the hallway with cornice formed of paired modillions. Number 12 retains a marble fireplace in the ground floor rear room, with shaped ends to stairs. Number 13 retains marble fireplaces in ground floor front and first floor front and rear rooms, with stairs featuring square balusters and shaped ends in the hallway whose cornice has guttae decoration; the end wall has round-headed niches either side of the landing window, and some added partitions are noted. Number 14 has stairs with square balusters in the front hallway with guttae cornice decoration and round-headed niches either side of the landing window. Number 15 retains marble fireplaces on the ground and first floors, with stairs featuring square balusters. Number 16, despite additions, retains a marble fireplace in the ground floor front room and stairs with square balusters. Number 17 retains stairs with square balusters, a marble fireplace with contemporary iron centre in the ground floor rear room, and a marble fireplace with sculptured leafwork in the first floor front room, along with contemporary china bell pulls and door plates. Number 18 retains marble fireplaces with sculptured leafwork in the first floor rooms. Number 19 retains good marble fireplaces in ground and first floor rooms.
Cast-iron railings with urn finials are attached to the areas.
