Description

The Church of St Peter is a chapel of ease, largely dating to 1865, though with an earlier origin of 1841, built for the Reverend E.R. Benyon. It was designed by A.W. Blomfield. The building is constructed of random kidney flint, with a band of black knapped flint below the eaves and across the gable walls, and has plain tiles with ornamental ridge tiles. It is built in the Early English style and consists of a nave and chancel, a vestry projecting to the north side, a porch in a rustic style at the west end, and a small timber turret over the junction of the nave and chancel. The nave has three two-light windows with cusped plate tracery and surrounds constructed of white brick and black knapped flint. The chancel features single-light windows with trefoil heads. The east window contains three lancets set within a wide encircling arch of flint and brick. The west window is a heavy rose form, with a central eight-pointed circle surrounded by eight cusped circles. An ornate cross sits on the apex of each gable.

The interior includes stained and painted glass by Lavers and Barraud. The east and chancel windows contain stained glass depicting the Agony, Crucifixion and Christ at Emmaus, the Last Supper, the Ministry of Christ and the Descent of the Spirit. The nave windows depict scenes from the life of St Peter in grisaille (although some elements are missing), and the west rose window features richly patterned foliage in stained glass. A reredos by Maw and Co. is present, alongside a circular font.
