Description
The barn at Heath Farm is an early 18th-century structure that features a timber frame and weatherboarding, topped with a slate roof, except for the westernmost bay which has pantiles. The barn consists of seven bays and includes a wide cart entry in the central bay. The wall framing is distinctive, with alternate bays on each side having a middle rail that does not align from one side to the other. The studs are positioned on edge, and in the bays without a middle rail, they are divided by long primary braces. The barn has straight tie-beams with long arched braces on all but one truss, which features bolted kneed braces that appear to be original. The roof is composed of nine bays with two rows of stepped purlins and a ridge-piece. All components are pegged, and there are no reused timbers. A partition has been removed from the easternmost bay, and a mid-20th-century floor has been added throughout the building. Additionally, there is a 19th-century lean-to extension along the entire south side.
