Description
Fieldside Cottages is a pair of cottages built in 1823. They are constructed from random flint with brick dressings, quoins, and vertical strips, topped with a pantile roof that features a central brick ridge stack. Each cottage has a single depth plan with two rooms, a central plank door, and a 2-light casement window on either side, framed in wood with an iron lattice. There are also 2-light gable dormers above each cottage towards the center of the row, and the only doors are located at the rear.
The interior of the cottages is virtually unaltered, showcasing plank doors, brick floors, exposed bridging beams and joists, a straight flight of stairs, and large fireplaces with cooking ranges. A datestone inscribed with the year 1823 can be seen on the right side of the front elevation.
Historically, these cottages were built for the 2nd Marquess Cornwallis, who lived from 1774 to 1823, during his ownership of Culford Hall. He made several improvements to the estate, employing notable figures like James Wyatt and Humphry Repton for the hall and park. After Lord Cornwallis's death in 1823, the estate was sold, and these cottages are marked on the 1823 estate map.
Despite being unoccupied for many years, the cottages remain in a remarkably unaltered state and form an important group with the adjacent Wellside Cottages and the nearby Church of St. Peter.
